A comprehensive evaluation of methadone maintenance programs in New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore was undertaken in order to ascertain the effectiveness of this treatment modality. It was found that intravenous drug use among these patients decreased by 71 percent from preadmission levels and that crime was reduced by 79 percent. These findings were based upon on-site data collection at the programs which included the identification and measurement of 89 tratment domain variables as well as face-to-face interviews with 617 patients. A multivariate statistical analysis revealed that treatment factors were more evidently correlated with successful outcome than baseline patient characteristics. [Editeur]
